Introduction to 'Akka'

Dharmaraj Shetty has made a remarkable debut with Yash Raj Films, creating the web series Akka. This series, rich in elaborate saris and golden accessories, including double nose rings, showcases Shetty's unique vision.

Plot Overview

Released on Netflix on October 30, the five-episode Hindi series delves into the power struggles within the fictional coastal town of Pernuru, ruled by a matriarchal family. Set between the 1940s and 1980s, Akka features the matriarch Muthakka (Tanvi Azmi) and her daughter Bhavani (Keerthy Suresh), who dominate the local liquor trade.

The arrival of Rudra (Radhika Apte) from Mumbai sets the stage for conflict as she seeks to claim the title of 'Akka' or queen, with the backing of the Mumbai underworld.

Themes and Character Dynamics

Shetty emphasizes the central theme of moral dilemmas faced by leaders, stating, "The core conflict revolves around doing what is right versus what is necessary, a challenge leaders encounter globally."

In Pernuru, women opt for partners instead of traditional marriages, and inheritance flows through the female line, creating tension among the local men.

Shetty's Background and Inspiration

Originating from Mangaluru, Shetty drew inspiration from his hometown for Akka, with actual filming locations in Kerala. After earning a degree in business management, he transitioned to filmmaking, previously working on commercials and an unreleased film featuring Vijay Varma.

The concept for Akka emerged during the Covid pandemic, and a pivotal meeting with YRF Entertainment's script development head, Deepanjali Sarkar, propelled the project forward.

Character Development and Casting Choices

Initially envisioned as a gangster drama centered on female characters, Shetty expanded the narrative after discovering the rich history of female warriors in Mangaluru and Kerala.

He aimed to create a world that reflected the culture of Mangaluru while incorporating fantastical elements. With YRF's support, Shetty was able to elevate the show's grandeur.

Radhika Apte, a seasoned actress, portrays the cunning Rudra, whose character is inspired by Bollywood icon Parveen Babi. Shetty sought an actress who could embody both strength and playfulness, making Apte the perfect choice.

Keerthy Suresh, making her streaming debut, plays Bhavani, who must navigate the complexities of leadership while maintaining her family's legacy.

Visual Aesthetics and Costume Design

The series features stunning costumes designed by Sheetal Sharma, showcasing vibrant saris and an impressive array of gold and silver jewelry. Shetty noted, "Women in the South have always adorned themselves with jewelry, and we aimed to capture that aesthetic without overshadowing the characters."

The set design complements the characters' wardrobes, with each of Pernuru's three houses reflecting distinct color schemes and styles.

Conclusion

Shetty's vision for Akka celebrates femininity while also resonating with male viewers, who find reflections of their own lives in the characters. The series promises to be a captivating exploration of power, identity, and the complexities of human relationships.
