Exploring Cultural Clashes in 'Param Sundari': A Romantic Comedy Review
A Journey of Love and Cultural Differences
In the romantic comedy 'Param Sundari', aspiring entrepreneur Param, portrayed by Siddharth Malhotra, is convinced by an inventor to invest in a dating application. This leads him to discover a perfect match in Sundari, played by Janhvi Kapoor, who operates a homestay in a quaint town near Allapuzha, Kerala.
Accompanied by his friend Juggy, portrayed by Manjot Singh, Param arrives at Sundari's homestay. Initially, Sundari is not very welcoming, although her younger sister Ammu, played by Inayat Verma, is more friendly. Sundari's uncle, Bhargavan, played by Bhargavan Renji Panicker, is openly hostile towards Param. As the story unfolds, romance blossoms but faces challenges when another suitor, Venu, enters the scene.
Directed by Tushar Jalota, 'Param Sundari' is the latest take on the classic theme of cultural differences in romance, particularly between the North and South of India. The film aims to avoid the clichés often found in Bollywood, such as confusing regional identities.
Despite the humorous portrayal of Param and Juggy's astonishment at being in Kerala, the film attempts to be culturally aware, as indicated by the characters' interactions and dialogues in Malayalam. The narrative showcases various elements from Kerala's tourism highlights, including coconut trees, traditional attire, and local customs.
While the film's cultural references are abundant, it ultimately falls short of being impactful. The predictable plot and lack of depth in character development make it feel somewhat trivial. The performances of Malhotra and Kapoor, while visually appealing, do not elevate the film beyond its superficial charm.
As the film progresses, it becomes evident that the creators have made an effort to incorporate authentic elements of Kerala's culture, including traditional dance forms and local festivities. However, the overall execution leaves much to be desired, making 'Param Sundari' a light-hearted yet forgettable watch.
