Exciting News: 'Rick and Morty' Set for a Feature Film Adaptation!
Warner Bros. Moves Ahead with 'Rick and Morty' Film
Warner Bros. is taking significant steps towards creating a feature film based on the beloved animated series "Rick and Morty." Currently, the project is in its preliminary phases, and specific plot details remain undisclosed. Jacob Hair, who has been part of the show since 2019, is in talks to direct the film. This news arrives as the Emmy-winning series prepares for its ninth season and has already been renewed through its twelfth season.
As reported by a prominent entertainment outlet, Hair's potential role as director was confirmed by Dan Harmon, the series co-creator, during a recent discussion with CinemaBlend. Harmon noted that they did not consider any other candidates for the director's position, stating, "Jacob Hair is the director. We didn’t shop around." Hair is currently the supervising director for the series, which has earned critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase since its launch in 2013.
While the animated film does not have a set release date, Warner Bros. has kept the storyline a secret. "Rick and Morty" chronicles the wild adventures of the quirky inventor Rick Sanchez and his impressionable teenage grandson Morty as they embark on strange and often dangerous interdimensional journeys. The series has consistently been one of the most-watched comedies on basic cable and has won numerous Emmy Awards for its creative storytelling and humor.
Alongside the film, a spinoff series titled "President Curtis," featuring Keith David in the lead role, is slated to debut on Adult Swim. The franchise has encountered some hurdles, including the exit of co-creator Justin Roiland in 2023 due to felony domestic abuse charges, which were subsequently dismissed. Roiland was the original voice behind both main characters before the roles were recast.
Harmon has previously shared his enthusiasm for the film's progress, outlining his vision for the project to Warner Bros. executives. He aims to craft the film as an extended "Rick and Morty" adventure, aspiring to create a "super badass episode" while maintaining the show's signature tone. Harmon also mentioned that filmmaker Zack Snyder had once offered his support in getting the movie off the ground, underscoring the excitement surrounding this upcoming venture.
