New York, Aug 21: A captivating documentary detailing the remarkable journey of an Indian street artist who cycled from Delhi to Sweden for love made its debut in New York, sharing a poignant narrative of caste, culture, and human connection with an American audience.
Entitled “The Cycle of Love,” the film chronicles the life of P.K. Mahanandia, a 23-year-old artist from a humble Dalit background, and Lotta von Schedvin, a 19-year-old Swedish woman who visited India in 1977.
The documentary premiered at the Directors Guild of America Theatre in Manhattan, featuring a red-carpet event. Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel, known for works like “The White Helmets” and “Virunga,” the film captures a unique love story.
The narrative unfolds as Mahanandia, who was working as a street artist in Delhi, met von Schedvin when she requested him to sketch her portrait. This encounter sparked a romance that transcended geographical and social boundaries.
After von Schedvin returned to Sweden, Mahanandia embarked on a 6,000-mile bicycle journey, traversing nearly a dozen countries to reunite with her.
“The Cycle of Love is inspired by our parents’ love story and their meeting,” shared Emelie Mahanandia von Schedvin, their daughter, in an interview.
She noted that the director aimed to delve into the broader significance of the journey rather than merely recounting her father's life story.
“He wanted to highlight our parents' love story and the diverse individuals they encountered along the way, showcasing the journey from India to Sweden,” she explained.
The production team engaged with various people from different cultures throughout their travels, and these spontaneous interactions were woven into the documentary.
“Even if language barriers exist, the language of the heart is universal. Despite our different religions, we all share a common faith in love,” Emelie remarked.
Chirag Benedict Lobo portrays Mahanandia, while Mina Dale plays von Schedvin. Lobo emphasized that the film's interactions with real people reinforced its core message.
“Everyone featured in the film are real individuals sharing their insights on life, faith, love, and destiny,” he stated.
“These genuine conversations deeply moved me, affirming that our society is not broken and that everyone yearns for love, which we must share in this divided world,” Lobo added.
Dale, hailing from Norway, expressed that this production marked her first visit to India. The actors performed without scripted lines, filming in locations where the actual events took place.
“Everything was improvised. There were no scripts, and we filmed in the very places where these events unfolded, which was incredible,” she shared.
Among the executive producers is Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who resonated with the film's cross-cultural narrative. Karl Mahanandia von Schedvin, the couple’s son and a producer, noted that Chopra Jonas connected with the story due to her own multicultural marriage.
“She was drawn to our parents' story because she can relate to it, having a husband from a different country while being from India herself,” Emelie explained.
This documentary is produced by the Academy Award-winning team behind “The White Helmets” and “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl).” Producers include Emelie and Karl Mahanandia von Schedvin, Harri Grace, and Chloe Leland.
Chopra Jonas, an internationally recognized Indian actor and producer, has been instrumental in promoting Indian and South Asian narratives to global audiences. “The Cycle of Love” continues this mission, weaving a story that spans India, Europe, and the United States.
