Insights from Satinder Sartaaj on His Musical Journey

Punjabi Sufi musician Satinder Sartaaj recently shared fascinating details about the making of his well-known songs like Sai Ve and the popular Jaiye Sajana from Dhurandhar 2. He was the first guest on Baatein Dil Se, a new podcast hosted by Navika Kumar, the Editor-in-Chief of Times Group. During a candid conversation, Sartaaj discussed his straightforward approach to music, noting that he seldom considers how a song will be received. His primary focus is on his passion for music rather than seeking recognition.

Creating Music from Home

In the podcast, Sartaaj revealed that he initially recorded in studios like many artists, but his method has changed over the years. "At first, I did record in a studio. For instance, we recorded Sai there. However, since 2014, I've produced every song myself, including Rang, all from my home studio," he explained. He has set up a small studio at home, which he calls 'Najamgah', where he prefers to work. Interestingly, he mentioned that the microphone in this space needs about 40-45 minutes to warm up before he can start recording. This setup has become his creative sanctuary, and he sends out his work without revisiting it.

Releasing Music Without Second Thoughts

Sartaaj shared that he often releases songs without any follow-up. "I just created Rang and sent it out without any second thoughts. People find it hard to believe, but even when my song with Tanishk (Bagchi) was released, I was performing in Hyderabad. I learned about its release through a text from him. It’s true; I don’t search for or listen to my songs after they come out," he stated.

Finding Solitude in Creativity

Some might consider Satinder Sartaaj's approach to be unconventional, but the artist from Hoshiarpur, Punjab embraces it wholeheartedly. He finds happiness in solitude, even when surrounded by friends. "I feel happier when I’m alone," he remarked. He elaborated, "While I enjoy my friends' company, I prefer being by myself. Even during travels, I have my driver, and I enjoy the quiet in my car, observing the fields and roads without any distractions. One should appreciate the journey of life."
