Diljit Dosanjh's Film 'Satluj' Faces Streaming Ban in India
Unexpected Release and Immediate Withdrawal
The film Satluj, featuring Diljit Dosanjh and directed by Honey Trehan, made its debut on ZEE5 on July 3 without any prior announcement. This film had been held back for over three years due to censorship challenges but was finally cleared for streaming without any edits. However, just two days post-release, ZEE5 declared that Satluj will no longer be available in India until further notice, with no explanation provided for this sudden decision. The announcement left many viewers astonished.
Reasons Behind the Streaming Ban
Why is Satluj not streaming in India?
The creators of Satluj expressed their appreciation for the global audience's support in a statement. They emphasized the significance of the love received and acknowledged the efforts of everyone involved in bringing the story to life. ZEE5 reiterated its commitment to the film and its creative vision, stating that impactful storytelling can inspire and resonate deeply. However, they confirmed that due to recent developments, the film would be unavailable in India until further notice, while they explore all possible avenues to restore it to their audience as soon as possible.
Controversy Surrounding the Film
What's the controversy with Satluj?
Originally titled Panjab 95, Satluj faced a three-year delay due to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) rejecting its release over concerns regarding its political themes and potential viewer impact. The board suggested over 120 cuts, but the filmmakers stood firm against these demands. The film was initially set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023 but was withdrawn pending a decision from the Bombay High Court. After years of waiting, the title was changed, and the film was released on OTT without any cuts.
A Story Rooted in Reality
Satluj based on real story
Satluj is based on the tragic events following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, during which over 2,000 individuals were unlawfully killed and cremated in Punjab's Tarn Taran district. The film follows Jaswant Singh Khalra, a bank director in Amritsar, who uncovered evidence of these atrocities. Tragically, he was abducted and murdered in 1995 after his findings ignited global protests, receiving support from the Supreme Court of India and the National Human Rights Commission. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky, Geetika Vidya, among others.
