Dhurandhar: The Revenge Achieves Major Success

Aditya Dhar’s latest film, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, featuring Ranveer Singh, has not only met the high expectations set by its predecessor, Dhurandhar, but has also set multiple box office records shortly after its release. Despite its impressive debut, the film is still trailing behind two significant benchmarks—one on a global scale and another in the United States. Within just five days of its release, Dhurandhar 2 has proven to be a box office powerhouse.

The plot revolves around an undercover government agent who infiltrates crime syndicates in Karachi, Pakistan. Drawing inspiration from real-life incidents such as the 26/11 attacks and Operation Lyari, both Dhurandhar films are politically charged while also being commercially appealing.

The film's opening weekend was nothing short of spectacular, grossing an impressive $81 million globally within its first three days, marking it as the second-largest global opening for an Indian film in history. However, it narrowly misses the top position. Curious about which Indian film holds the record? It’s Pushpa 2: The Rule, which achieved an unmatched $97.9 million opening at the global box office.

Nonetheless, this does not diminish the success of Dhurandhar 2. Its performance underscores the high standards set for Indian blockbusters in recent years. The film is not underperforming; rather, it is competing in an era where records are consistently being broken.

The situation is similar in the United States, where Dhurandhar: The Revenge opened to $10 million in its first three days, eventually reaching $14 million within five days. These figures are significant for an Indian film in North America, yet it still falls short of the record held by SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2, which opened at $10.4 million during its three-day weekend—a record that has remained unbroken for years. While Dhurandhar 2 has come close, it has not yet surpassed this long-standing benchmark.

It’s important to note that achieving such numbers is still an extraordinary feat, especially considering that at 229 minutes (3 hours and 49 minutes), it ranks among the longest films ever produced. Such a lengthy runtime typically limits the number of screenings, potentially capping box office earnings. Yet, despite this challenge, the film has achieved remarkable figures, establishing itself as an event cinema with significant audience demand and repeat viewings.

The sequel has benefited from the goodwill generated by its predecessor, which was also a commercial hit. Both films have received mixed reviews, praised for their performances and scale, but critiqued for a perceived nationalist perspective. Additionally, the films' bans in several Gulf Cooperation Council countries have resulted in a notable loss of potential revenue from that region.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge has already become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2026 and has entered the ranks of the top 10 highest-grossing Indian films of all time—all within its first week. The film has comfortably exceeded its production budget, solidifying its status as a commercial triumph almost immediately. Its performance also highlights a broader trend: the increasing global interest in Indian cinema. From the Baahubali series to RRR, Indian films have steadily expanded their reach in international markets. Dhurandhar 2 fits perfectly within this trend, showcasing that high-concept action films with strong emotional narratives can resonate across borders.

As for Pushpa 2 and Baahubali 2, they are not merely successful films but event films that have redefined the possibilities for Indian cinema at the global box office. Competing with them is less about surpassing their achievements and more about joining an elite league. In many respects, Dhurandhar: The Revenge has already accomplished that.
