Delhi High Court Reserves Bail Order On Leena Maria Paulose case

The Delhi High Court has reserved its decision regarding the bail requests submitted by Leena Maria Paulose in relation to the Rs 200 crore extortion and money laundering case. This case has attracted significant public and legal scrutiny and is still under active review. Paulose has been in judicial custody since September 2021, with her bail applications pending since 2024. The Supreme Court had previously instructed that a resolution be reached within a designated timeframe.

Advocate Anant Malik, representing Paulose, argued that the strict “twin conditions” outlined in the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) should not be applicable to her case. He asserted that she had no knowledge of her husband's alleged criminal activities. The defense also emphasized her personal circumstances, including a troubled relationship with Sukesh Chandrasekhar, arguing that her connection to him should not automatically suggest involvement in illegal activities. Furthermore, her legal team pointed out her extended detention and health issues, including a chronic illness, as valid reasons for considering her bail.

Opposition from Enforcement Directorate

Approximately three weeks ago, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), represented by Advocate Vivek Gurnani, firmly opposed the bail request. The agency claimed that significant proceeds of crime were involved and alleged that Leena Maria Paulose actively participated in money laundering. They further accused her of utilizing the proceeds for personal and business ventures, including starting a nail artistry business and indulging in luxury services like private jet travel. Notably, a Delhi court granted bail to Sukesh Chandrasekhar on April 7, citing that prolonged detention without a timely trial infringes on the fundamental right to personal liberty.
