Curry Barker's Upcoming Feature Film

Hollywood appears to have found the answer to the burning question: What will filmmaker Curry Barker do next? Recent reports indicate that Barker has made a decision on his next project following the success of Obsession, which starred Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston. Universal Film Group and Blumhouse Atomic Monster have officially secured Barker’s next feature, marking his first announcement since the breakout success of Obsession, which has become one of the year's biggest hits.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Barker has entered into a lucrative eight-figure deal to write, direct, and produce his third feature film in collaboration with Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal. This agreement strengthens Barker’s relationship with Universal, which released his acclaimed horror film Obsession through its specialty label, Focus Features. The same label will also support his upcoming film, Anything But Ghosts, which has already been completed and was both written and directed by Barker.

Blumhouse Atomic Monster has significantly contributed to Barker’s ascent, collaborating on Obsession after its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and serving as a production partner for Anything But Ghosts. They will continue in a similar role for the newly announced project. Joining the production team are Roy Lee and Steven Schneider’s Spooky Pictures, along with Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath’s Divide/Conquer, known for horror hits like The Black Phone and Heart Eyes.

While details about the plot remain confidential, it is reported that the upcoming film is based on an original horror concept developed by Barker. The project was acquired after Barker pitched the idea directly to Universal executives. NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley praised Barker's unique ability to connect with the cultural zeitgeist, stating, “Barker’s talent is redefining what’s possible, and we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with him.” The untitled film will be distributed globally by Universal Film Group.

In a statement regarding the new project, Barker expressed his excitement, noting that he has been eager to create this film for some time. He is thrilled to be collaborating again with Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Film Group. Partners James Wan and Jason Blum from Blumhouse Atomic Monster also commended Obsession, highlighting their partnership with Barker and noting that he created something truly original that resonated with a wide audience. They emphasized, “That connection is what we care about most,” and expressed pride in their growing collaboration with Barker. Since its release on May 15, Obsession has become a cultural phenomenon, igniting discussions on social media. The film achieved the remarkable milestone of outperforming its $17.2 million debut for four consecutive weekends. Produced independently on a budget of $750,000, this horror sensation continues to excel at the global box office and is projected to surpass the $300 million mark worldwide.
