Copyright Dispute Surrounds Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Film
Legal Controversy Over Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai
The film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has found itself embroiled in a legal dispute as Puja Entertainment India Limited (PEIL), led by producer Vashu Bhagnani, has accused the film of copyright infringement concerning the songs Chunnari Chunnari and Ishq Sona Hai. In response, Tips Music Limited has released a public notice asserting that it is the rightful owner of the copyrights and associated rights for these songs. The company has indicated that it has taken all necessary legal actions, including seeking intervention from the Supreme Court of India with an order dated May 22, 2026.
Response from Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Team
On May 25, the producers of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai addressed the ongoing copyright claims regarding the songs Chunnari Chunnari and Ishq Sona Hai. Tips Music Limited issued a notice countering the allegations from PEIL, emphasizing that it holds the legitimate copyrights and related rights for the songs in question. The company firmly denied the claims made by PEIL and stated that all uses of the songs have been conducted legally. Furthermore, Tips Music confirmed that it has already initiated all necessary legal proceedings regarding this matter.
Reiterating its commitment, Tips Music expressed its dedication to safeguarding its intellectual property rights and is actively pursuing all legal avenues in consultation with its advisors and in accordance with applicable laws.
Background of the Legal Dispute
The conflict originated when Vashu Bhagnani claimed that Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by David Dhawan, incorporated elements from the 1999 film Biwi No. 1 without obtaining the necessary permissions. The main focus of the dispute is the song Chunnari Chunnari, which Bhagnani alleges was used without authorization from Pooja Entertainment.
Bhagnani subsequently filed a lawsuit in Katihar, Bihar, seeking to protect the intellectual property rights associated with films and songs produced under his banner. Reports indicate that the court has instructed all parties to maintain the current situation until further legal examination. This legal battle appears to encompass more than just one song, extending to rights related to films such as Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, and Biwi No. 1. Bhagnani has stated that he would retract his objections if the filmmakers can demonstrate that no unauthorized content was utilized. Meanwhile, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, featuring Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde, and Mrunal Thakur, is set to release in theaters on June 5, 2026.
