Mumbai, Nov 2: The BJP and Shiv Sena have voiced their disapproval of Bollywood actress Dia Mirza's involvement in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) initiative promoting a pollution-free Diwali. They argue that citizens are well aware of how to celebrate the festival without needing guidance.

This political uproar followed the BMC's decision to remove a video featuring Mirza from its campaign after objections from Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam, igniting a debate about the civic body's awareness efforts.

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale commented that while Dia Mirza is part of the Muslim community, the matter transcends religious boundaries.

"Dia Mirza is an actress and a member of the Muslim community, but this issue is not about any specific religion. The Constitution, established by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, allows every faith to celebrate its festivals in India," Athawale stated.

He further noted that just as Muslims celebrate Eid and Ramadan, Hindus also partake in their festivals, including Diwali. He emphasized that while avoiding firecrackers is important for reducing pollution, the essence of Diwali should not be lost.

BJP MLC Shrikant Bharatiya suggested that Mirza should reflect on the customs of her community before making comments about Diwali celebrations.

"We do not oppose any religion or mode of worship. However, she should engage with her community to understand their perspectives," he remarked.

Bharatiya added, "People in this country are aware of how to celebrate Diwali; they do not require guidance from Dia Mirza. Hindus have been environmentally conscious for generations, and this is not a new concept for us. Mirza does not need to instruct us on the appropriate use of firecrackers."

Shiv Sena's National Spokesperson Shaina NC remarked that all citizens recognize the importance of being environmentally conscious during Diwali.

"Dia Mirza, whose name signifies light, should understand that Diwali is the Festival of Lights. Every individual is aware of the need to minimize pollution and avoid firecrackers for safety and health reasons," she stated.

The BMC had urged residents to refrain from using firecrackers and to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali, following a directive from the Bombay High Court due to increasing air pollution levels in Mumbai.

As part of this initiative, the civic body enlisted several celebrities, including Dia Mirza, Madhuri Dixit, and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane, to create video messages encouraging a pollution-free celebration.

However, Satam criticized Mirza's participation, labeling it as outsiders attempting to dictate how to celebrate Diwali.

In a post on X, the Mumbai BJP chief stated, "We do not require lessons on celebrating Diwali from Dia Mirza. Our traditions are deeply embedded in our culture."

Following Satam's remarks, the BMC removed the video featuring Mirza from its social media channels, leading to a political controversy surrounding the awareness campaign.
