Actor Tillotama Shome has voiced her disappointment regarding the withdrawal of the Diljit Dosanjh film "Satluj" from the ZEE5 streaming service, describing the move as "heartbreaking." The film, which tells the story of human rights advocate Jaswant Singh Khalra, debuted on July 3 but was removed just two days later. Officials attributed the decision to "security concerns" and adherence to IT Rules 2021, sparking a debate about the limits of creative freedom in Indian cinema.

In a conversation with a news outlet, Shome highlighted the emotional impact on filmmakers who dedicate immense effort to their creations. She stated, "It is really tough. It is heartbreaking for a filmmaker to put in so much hard work. In a democracy, we must have the freedom to watch and not watch. We should be adults about it." Shome further pointed out that the battle for creative expression extends beyond "Satluj," marking a long-standing issue in the history of Indian cinema.

Initially named "Punjab '95," "Satluj" underwent a protracted censorship process lasting over three years, during which the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) requested more than 127 edits. The film was eventually released in its complete form on ZEE5, only to be taken down shortly after, underscoring the ongoing difficulties filmmakers face with regulatory challenges.

Shome, recognized for her performances in notable films and series like "Sir," "Lust Stories 2," and "Delhi Crime 2," acknowledged the intricacies involved in filmmaking. She remarked, "When has a film been easy to make? I've not experienced it. But I understand that it's complex, like life." Despite these hurdles, she remains optimistic that the intrinsic human desire for storytelling will endure, no matter the obstacles encountered by creators.
