What’s Next for Diljit Dosanjh’s Controversial Film 'Satluch' After Its Sudden Removal?
Challenges Faced by 'Satluch' Post-Release
Diljit Dosanjh's much-anticipated movie, "Satluch," has hit significant roadblocks following its release. Originally named "Punjab 95," the film debuted on July 3 after facing multiple delays primarily due to censorship hurdles. Although there were intentions for a theatrical launch, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) mandated numerous cuts, leading the creators to release an unedited version on a streaming service. Unfortunately, its availability in India was fleeting, as it was pulled from the platform within just 48 hours due to government orders.
Initially, viewers in countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia could still watch "Satluch." However, recent reports indicate that the film has also been removed from the international library of the streaming service. Social media users were quick to point out the film's disappearance, with comments reflecting the ongoing censorship efforts. One user noted, "So, it's been removed internationally as well," while another added, "Satlooj has now been removed from Z5 internationally as well." Director Hani Dhan has confirmed the film's removal from international streaming platforms.
A review panel appointed by the government has reportedly defended the earlier actions against the film, citing issues related to India's sovereignty, integrity, and national security. The panel has suggested that current restrictions should remain, indicating that officials do not find sufficient reasons to ease these limitations at this moment. While the complete findings of the review committee have not been made public, this recommendation has introduced new uncertainties regarding the film's future. Neither the filmmakers nor the streaming service has provided an official statement regarding these developments.
Despite the film's removal, some users claim that "Satluch" can still be accessed through alternative means. The film had attracted considerable international attention after its digital release and is inspired by the life of Sikh human rights activist Jaswan Singh Kalra. As one of the most discussed projects in Dosanjh's career, the film's ongoing unavailability raises concerns about its distribution strategy. Fans are eagerly awaiting an official update from the filmmakers as discussions about the film's release and restrictions continue.
