Controversy Surrounds Honey Trehan's Film 'Satluj' After Brief Release

Honey Trehan's film 'Satluj', which was briefly available on Zee5, has been embroiled in controversy after being removed from the platform and screened illegally in various regions. Advocate Vineet Jindal has taken legal action, petitioning the Punjab and Haryana High Court to address these unauthorized viewings, which he argues could incite violence and disrupt communal harmony. As the situation unfolds, the film's future remains uncertain.

Challenges Faced by 'Satluj'

Honey Trehan's film, 'Satluj', formerly known as 'Punjab ‘95', has encountered serious obstacles since its launch. After three years of development, the film premiered on Zee5 on July 3, but was removed from the platform just two days later. Despite its short-lived availability, the film has been shown illegally in various regions, including Punjab and Jammu, leading to legal actions from an advocate concerned about the repercussions of these unauthorized screenings.

Advocate Vineet Jindal has submitted a petition to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, requesting intervention against the unlawful public showings of 'Satluj'. In a post on X, Jindal voiced his worries, stating, “I am pursuing appropriate measures against individuals, religious groups, and political entities involved in hosting illegal public screenings of the film.” He stressed that these unauthorized viewings could provoke violence and create hostility towards specific communities and security forces, thereby jeopardizing public order and communal peace in Punjab.

In a video statement, Jindal reiterated the legal consequences of screening a film that lacks official approval. He called on the High Court and law enforcement to initiate First Information Reports (FIRs) against those facilitating these illegal screenings, underscoring the necessity for stringent law enforcement to preserve tranquility in the area.

Initially, the film was only removed from streaming services in India, but Trehan confirmed to SCREEN that it has also been taken down from international platforms. 'Satluj' is inspired by the life and tragic demise of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, and its contentious themes have ignited considerable debate and concern regarding its potential to escalate societal tensions.
