Christopher Nolan's name alone is enough to attract audiences to cinemas, even in India. His latest film, The Odyssey, has made a remarkable debut in the country. Starring a stellar cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron, The Odyssey has surpassed Nolan's previous film, Oppenheimer, in terms of opening day earnings.

As per industry tracker Sacnilk, The Odyssey achieved a net collection of over Rs 17 crore on its opening day in India. With more than 6,500 screenings nationwide on its first day, this mythological action film received an outstanding response across both North and South India. It outperformed Oppenheimer, which earned Rs 14.45 crore on its debut day. The majority of the opening day revenue came from English screenings, while the Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubbed versions contributed significantly as well. With no new Indian films competing, The Odyssey is expected to continue its upward trajectory over the weekend.

Experts Anticipate a Strong Opening for The Odyssey

Before the film's release, industry expert Ramesh Bala shared insights with Zoom, highlighting the anticipation surrounding The Odyssey in India. He remarked, "Christopher Nolan has garnered a level of trust and excitement typically reserved for the top Indian filmmakers," and predicted that the film could open in the Rs 18-22 crore nett range on its first day, aiming for a Rs 65-75 crore nett opening weekend in India. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh expressed confidence in the film's performance, noting the impressive response it has generated. He emphasized Nolan's established market presence in India, which he believes will lead to strong box office results. With excellent advance bookings, he is optimistic that audiences will also appreciate the film.

What Is The Odyssey About?

The Odyssey is Nolan's grand adaptation of Homer's renowned poem. The narrative follows Odysseus (Matt Damon), the valiant king of Ithaca, who embarks on a journey home to his wife Penelope and son Telemachus, portrayed by Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, respectively, after the Trojan War. However, divine interference and a series of perilous adventures transform his journey into a decade-long struggle to return home. Throughout his travels, Odysseus encounters mythical beings such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the enchantress Circe. Lupita Nyong'o plays Helen of Troy, while Zendaya takes on the role of the goddess Athena, alongside Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron.
