After stepping away from the character for five years following his last appearance in "Avengers: Endgame," the 45-year-old actor disclosed that he had declined multiple project offers over the years until he felt the timing was finally right for his return. In a conversation with Gerrad Hall at San Diego Comic-Con, Evans elaborated on the creative path that led him back to this beloved character.

Evans recounted that shortly after the conclusion of "Endgame" in 2018, Marvel executives Lou D'Esposito and Kevin Feige approached him with a proposal to explore Steve Rogers' alternate persona, Nomad. "After we wrapped up Endgame, Lou and Kevin invited me to dinner and expressed their desire to continue the story with Steve Rogers as Nomad," Evans remembered. Although the concept intrigued him, he felt it wasn't the appropriate moment to revisit the character, stating, "I wanted to preserve it for a more suitable opportunity."

In the years that followed, Evans received numerous pitches from Marvel, each of which piqued his interest but ultimately fell short of his expectations. "It just never felt quite right," he reflected on his hesitance to return. His reluctance was not due to any negative feelings towards Marvel or the character, but rather a commitment to ensuring that any return would honor Steve Rogers' legacy and add value to the MCU storyline.

The pivotal moment for Evans came when he discovered that Robert Downey Jr. was in talks to return to the franchise. "I received a call from my team informing me that there were rumors about Robert Downey Jr. discussing a comeback with Marvel, and I thought, 'Uh-oh. What does this mean?'" Evans shared. The idea of reuniting with his longtime co-star made the prospect of returning feel right.
