Chinmayi Raises Concerns Over Vedan's Acceptance

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has voiced her concerns regarding accountability within the entertainment sector, particularly focusing on the public acceptance of Malayalam rapper Vedan. She criticized political figures and parties for seemingly legitimizing an individual with a history of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. Her remarks followed Vedan's recent engagements with political leaders, which ignited discussions on social media. Chinmayi urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK founder Vijay to exercise caution, emphasizing a broader issue where influential men continue to receive backing despite serious accusations against them.

Chinmayi Calls Out Political Leaders Over Vedan

In a social media post, Chinmayi expressed her dismay over the ongoing 'platforming' of Vedan despite the serious allegations against him. She specifically mentioned Tamil Nadu CM Vijay and School Education Minister Rajmohan, hoping they would refrain from repeating the mistakes of previous administrations by providing visibility to those accused of misconduct. This statement came after a photo of Vedan with Rajmohan circulated widely.

Chinmayi recounted that she first learned of Vedan's allegations during the COVID-19 pandemic when she was set to collaborate musically with him, composer Govind Vasantha, and lyricist Muhsin Parari. During a discussion on Malayalam Clubhouse, a woman questioned her choice to work with Vedan, which made her realize the controversy surrounding him, as most reports were in Malayalam at the time.

She noted that Vedan later issued an apology for his actions, leading to the cancellation of their project. Chinmayi mentioned that more women came forward with allegations against him afterward. She consciously distanced herself from events featuring Vedan, stating, "I routinely turned down concerts that he was a part of at great loss to my own work and opportunities." She expressed her inability to support individuals who, in her opinion, misuse social activism while allegedly violating women's consent.

Vedan's Activism and Accountability

Vedan is recognized for his music that tackles issues like caste discrimination and social inequality. However, Chinmayi argued that public activism should not exempt anyone from accountability. She pointed out a troubling trend where women who speak out against powerful men often find themselves isolated, while the accused continue to receive public admiration. "The problem remains: women in similar social groups get no support when they want to name men like Vedan," she stated, highlighting that many survivors feel compelled to endure such situations for what is often termed the 'greater good.'

Allegations Against Vedan

Rapper Vedan, whose real name is Hirandas Murali, first came under scrutiny during the #MeToo movement in 2021 when several women accused him of sexual misconduct. Following these allegations, he issued a lengthy public apology on Instagram, expressing regret for his past behavior and apologizing to women who had trusted him. He acknowledged mishandling his initial response to the allegations and conveyed deep remorse.

The controversy resurfaced in 2025 when a female doctor from Kozhikode filed a complaint accusing Vedan of repeatedly sexually assaulting her between 2021 and 2023 under false promises of marriage. Additional complaints from other women emerged in August 2025, including allegations submitted to the Kerala Chief Minister. Subsequently, police arrested Vedan in September 2025, although he was later granted anticipatory bail by the Kerala High Court.
