Challenges Arise for Upcoming Malayalam Film 'Patriot' Ahead of Release

The Malayalam film 'Patriot', featuring stars Mohanlal and Mammootty, is facing significant challenges ahead of its April 23 release due to disputes over revenue sharing. The Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala has advised theatres against screening the film until the issue is resolved, as producers seek a 60:40 split for the first two weeks, deviating from the traditional model. This situation could impact box office collections and audience anticipation. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, 'Patriot' boasts a star-studded cast and is highly awaited by fans across Kerala.

Issues Surrounding 'Patriot's' Release

The eagerly awaited Malayalam film Patriot, featuring the iconic duo of Mohanlal and Mammootty, is encountering obstacles prior to its planned release on April 23. The Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK) has advised cinemas against screening the film due to a disagreement over revenue distribution. The producers are seeking a 60:40 revenue split for the initial two weeks, deviating from the customary model of 60:40, 55:45, and 50:50 for subsequent weeks. FEUOK argues that this request would lead to financial difficulties for theatre owners.

Revenue Sharing Disputes Affect 'Patriot'

The film's release is jeopardized by conflicts over box office revenue sharing. FEUOK has declared that theatres should refrain from entering into screening agreements with the film's producers until the issue is settled. Typically, Malayalam film producers receive 60% of the box office in the first week, 55% in the second, and 50% in the third week, which allows theatre owners to maintain a fair profit margin while managing risks. Reports indicate that the producers of Patriot are insisting on a 60% share for the first two weeks of its release. FEUOK representatives have asserted that this demand undermines the established system and would render screenings financially unfeasible for theatre operators.

In Kerala, multiplex agreements often feature an even lower producer share than the standard model, making the producers' request particularly contentious. Producer Anto Joseph has reportedly sought a 60:40 split for the first fourteen days. Meanwhile, FEUOK insists that this demand contradicts the existing model, which stipulates 60:40, 55:45, and 50:50 splits for the first three weeks. B Rakesh, President of the Kerala Film Producers’ Association, mentioned that while no official complaints have been lodged, theatre owners might consider negotiating changes due to the film's substantial budget.

FEUOK President K Vijayakumar stressed the importance of adhering to the traditional revenue-sharing model to safeguard the interests of theatre operators. He warned that neglecting this model could lead to significant losses, especially in light of the recent underperformance of several Malayalam films at the box office. FEUOK has cautioned its members against signing agreements with the producers unless the revenue-sharing terms are amended. The film is highly anticipated by audiences throughout Kerala, and any delays could adversely affect both box office earnings and viewer enthusiasm.
