Cha Eun-Woo Issues Apology Amid Tax Evasion Controversy
Cha Eun-Woo's Apology Following Tax Evasion Scandal
In light of a significant tax evasion scandal, Cha Eun-Woo has publicly expressed his remorse, revealing that he has settled a penalty exceeding 20 billion won. The K-pop idol and actor shared his thoughts in a comprehensive statement, conveying his regret for disappointing his fans and the public who admire his work. This situation arose after South Korea’s National Tax Service (NTS) imposed one of the largest tax penalties on a celebrity to date. Cha's response indicates his willingness to accept responsibility and move forward from this incident.
Cha Eun-Woo Addresses Tax Scandal
The controversy first surfaced earlier this year when the NTS informed Cha of additional income tax assessments amounting to over 20 billion won, approximately $13.6 million. Authorities accused the star of creating a corporation under a family member’s name to minimize his tax obligations. Although Cha insisted there was no deliberate wrongdoing, the NTS reached a different conclusion and enforced the substantial penalty.
In his statement, Cha offered a straightforward and sincere apology. “I sincerely apologise for disappointing my fans and letting down the public over my recent tax issues,” he remarked, recognizing the seriousness of the matter. He expressed respect for the tax authorities' decision and confirmed, “I have paid the full owed amount to prevent further issues.”
Reason Behind the Company Formation
Delving into the allegations, Cha clarified that the corporation was established during a challenging phase in his career. He described it as an effort to stabilize his professional endeavors but admitted that he had not fully contemplated the consequences at that time. “In hindsight, I was not thinking it through during the process, and I bear sole responsibility,” he asserted, clearly distancing his family and company from any fault. The actor further emphasized his accountability, stating, “I am solely responsible for all the shortcomings. I will not hide behind excuses, saying I was not aware.”
Cha also recognized the delay in his public statement, explaining that he needed to be cautious while administrative procedures were underway. “Although it’s late, I want to directly share my thoughts and position now,” he mentioned. Addressing his fans, particularly his fanbase AROHA, Cha conveyed deep regret. He noted that the incident had led to significant self-reflection and pledged to implement stricter oversight in his future endeavors. “I will strive to be someone who takes full responsibility for my choices and actions,” he concluded. The case has garnered considerable attention due to Cha’s prominent status in the entertainment sector and the substantial fine he faced. Born Lee Dong-min, Cha began his acting journey with the film My Brilliant Life in 2014 and later debuted as a member of the K-pop group ASTRO in 2016, achieving international acclaim. He is celebrated for his striking looks and has been dubbed the ultimate 'visual' by fans.
