Two Decades of Iqbal: A Journey Through Time

It's hard to believe that twenty years have passed since the release of Iqbal. It feels like just yesterday when I was auditioning and filming right after my wedding. The memories from that time are truly cherished.

Iqbal's Enduring Legacy

The impact of Iqbal remains strong even today. Just yesterday, while picking up my daughter from school, a young girl, around seven or eight, approached me excitedly, saying, 'Uncle, I've watched your film Iqbal ten times!' This was astonishing to hear. Her mother confirmed her love for the film. Many parents have shared similar stories, telling me how they introduced Iqbal to their children, who also enjoyed it. A few years back, a man told me that he saw the film in school and it inspired him to become a doctor. These experiences are surreal and enrich my life immensely.

Landing the Role Early in My Career

I owe my role in Iqbal to my friend Yatin Karyekar, who played my father in the film. He encouraged me to audition, as we had a shared passion for cricket and theater. Nagesh Kukunoor was looking for someone who could act and bowl, and I was fortunate to be chosen. Although I was already 30 at the time, I had to portray an 18-year-old. I am incredibly grateful to Nagesh, Elahe Heptullah, Rahul Puri, and Subhash Ghai for this life-changing opportunity.

Working with a Talented Cast

Collaborating with esteemed actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Shweta Prasad, Yatin, and Prateeksha Lonkar was a remarkable experience. Each of them contributed significantly to my growth as an actor. Girish was exceptionally warm and supportive, while Naseer was incredibly helpful, often inviting me out for meals and film screenings. The camaraderie we shared made the filming of Iqbal unforgettable.

Memorable Moments from the Experience

From the auditions to the film's release, every moment of Iqbal is etched in my memory. It will always hold a special place in my heart. I am thankful to everyone who supported the film, helping it become a cult classic that remains relevant even after two decades. The story of the underdog resonates with many, showcasing the triumph of those who dare to dream and achieve their aspirations. This universal theme of hope and inspiration is what keeps Iqbal alive in the hearts of audiences.
