June 4 marks the 80th birthday of the iconic singer S P Balasubrahmanyam, who left an indelible mark on the music industry with over 50,000 recorded songs. Even nearly six years after his demise, fans and admirers continue to celebrate his remarkable contributions through social media. Notable figures paying homage include actor Kamal Haasan, Sai Kumar, composer Ilaiyaraaja, and various political leaders.

Kamal Haasan took to social media to share a poignant message in memory of his dear friend and collaborator. He expressed, "The finger that holds my hand, the voice that is my music brother, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam—today is his birth anniversary. May he live, as a voice." Their friendship and collaboration spanned decades, with SPB lending his voice to numerous songs featuring Haasan, such as Sorgam Madhuvile, Vaartha, Ore Jeevan, Orey Naal Unainaan, Aadungal, Manmatha Leelai, and Engeyum Eppodhum. Notably, SPB's Hindi playback debut was in Kamal Haasan's Ek Duuje Ke Liye, which earned him a National Film Award. Additionally, SPB provided dubbing for Haasan in several Telugu films, including Dasavathaaram.

Ilaiyaraaja's Fond Remembrance

Ilaiyaraaja remembers a lifelong collaborator, his best friend

Ilaiyaraaja posted a heartfelt video featuring a snapshot from one of their performances, stating, "No one understood a composer's vision faster, and no one poured more focus into a song than SPB." He referred to SPB as his best friend. Their collaboration resulted in numerous timeless tracks, including Kalyaana Maalai from Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal, Valaiyosai from Sathya, Enna Saththam Indha Neram from Punnagai Mannan, and Thenmadurai Vaigai Nadhi from Dharmathin Thalaivan. SP Balasubrahmanyam was honored with six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer across various languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi. Remarkably, he recorded 28 Kannada songs, 19 Tamil songs, and 16 Hindi songs in a single day on February 8, 1981. The Government of India recognized his contributions with the Padma Shri in 2001, the Padma Bhushan in 2011, and the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 2021. SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on September 25, 2020, in Chennai due to complications from COVID-19, but his voice and legacy continue to inspire music lovers across generations.
