Celebrating 50 Years of Odissi: A Seminar on Dance Heritage and Innovation

The Orissa Dance Academy recently hosted a national seminar titled 'Bahirangam: Beyond the Body' as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations. This event brought together prominent figures in the Odissi dance community to discuss the evolution and future of this classical art form. With presentations from esteemed gurus and scholars, the seminar emphasized the importance of preserving Odisha's rich dance heritage while encouraging innovative practices. The celebrations also include a cultural festival, Subarnima, showcasing the Academy's contributions over the past 50 years. Preserving Odissi Dance Heritage


Bhubaneswar: A national seminar emphasizing the importance of preserving the rich dance heritage of Odisha while fostering innovation in Odissi was held on Tuesday, marking the Golden Jubilee of the Orissa Dance Academy.


Entitled Bahirangam: Beyond the Body, the seminar took place at the GKCM Odissi Research Centre, gathering distinguished gurus, scholars, critics, and practitioners from all over the nation to explore the evolution, challenges, and future of Odissi dance.


The event was inaugurated by renowned Odissi exponent and scholar Priyambada Mohanty Hejmadi, alongside Guru Kumkum Mohanty. Hejmadi highlighted the significance of dance as a medium for cultural, spiritual, and traditional understanding.


She acknowledged the impressive national and international acclaim Odissi has garnered, thanks to the relentless efforts of countless artists and institutions over the years. Aruna Mohanty, Secretary of the Orissa Dance Academy and a celebrated dancer, remarked that the Golden Jubilee celebrations reflect the institution's five-decade-long commitment to promoting Odissi through performances, seminars, and collaborations with esteemed artists and alumni.


The seminar featured engaging presentations from leading Odissi practitioners. Guru Madhavi Mudgal discussed stage transformation and choreography, while dance critic Leela Venkataraman stressed the importance of engaging audiences. Guru Daksha Mashruwala explored creative innovations within Odissi vocabulary, and Guru Jhelum Paranjape analyzed the dance form's evolution beyond traditional Margam.


In the second session, Guru Aloka Kanungo spoke about integrating Gotipua traditions with contemporary techniques, Guru Sharmila Biswas highlighted the impact of Odisha's folk culture on modern choreography, and Guru Ratikanta Mohapatra presented innovative rhythmic explorations within the Odissi musical framework. The Academy also honored Guru Ileana Citaristi, Tapati Chowdhurie, and Guru Bichitrananda Swain for their significant contributions to Odissi and cultural scholarship.


The Golden Jubilee festivities are further celebrated through a three-day cultural festival named Subarnima at Rabindra Mandap, showcasing performances, special productions, and alumni presentations that honor the Academy's 50-year journey in promoting Odisha's classical dance heritage.
