Bhubaneswar: The art world mourns the passing of Jagadish Chandra Kanungo, a distinguished artist and art critic, who passed away on Wednesday at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar at the age of 86.

According to family members, Kanungo had been receiving treatment for various age-related health issues and succumbed in the morning.

A former president of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, Kanungo was a pivotal figure in the cultural landscape of Odisha, making notable contributions to contemporary art, heritage preservation, and art education. Prior to his presidency, he dedicated 16 years as the secretary of the Akademi, significantly enhancing its programs and outreach.

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Kanungo was well-respected as an art critic and scholar. He played a crucial role in editing the journal of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi and was the editor of the esteemed art magazine 'Ranga Rekha', which debuted in 1986.

Throughout his illustrious career, he was actively involved in various exhibitions, workshops, and cultural initiatives that aimed to promote Odisha's traditional art forms, especially Pattachitra, while also supporting contemporary artists.
