CBFC Approves The Voice of Hind Rajab for Theatrical Release in India
Film Certification Granted
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has officially approved Kauther Ben Hania’s highly regarded film, The Voice of Hind Rajab, allowing it to be released in theaters across India on June 19. This decision comes after months of uncertainty regarding the film's future in the country. Initially, the Mumbai-based distributor, Jai Viratra Entertainment, had aimed for a March 6 release but faced challenges in obtaining certification from the CBFC, despite submitting the film for review in February.
The political drama is inspired by the true story of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl who became emblematic of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza after she was tragically killed in an attack. The bodies of Hind, her family, and two rescue workers were discovered just meters apart. To authentically depict this tragedy, director Kaouther Ben Hania cast actors to represent the real Palestinian Red Crescent personnel involved in the rescue, incorporating actual voice recordings of Rajab, which adds a haunting realism to the film.
According to a report from Variety, Jai Viratra Entertainment announced that the film has received an ‘A’ certificate and notably, it has been approved without any cuts. This development concludes a lengthy struggle for the film's release. Earlier this year, Jai Viratra's head, Manoj Nandwana, publicly criticized the CBFC for its hesitance to approve the film, suggesting that concerns about its impact on India-Israel relations were unfounded. He argued that the diplomatic ties between the two nations were robust enough to handle the film's release, noting that it had already been shown in various countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy, all of which have relations with Israel.
Following the certification, Jai Viratra Entertainment expressed gratitude to the CBFC for granting approval without cuts, allowing Indian audiences to experience this significant cinematic work. The distributor emphasized the importance of cinema as a medium for storytelling and understanding diverse human experiences, appreciating the board's thoughtful evaluation of the film.
Jai Viratra also recognized the support it received from media members, filmmakers, artists, and industry colleagues during the certification process, stating that their encouragement was crucial in helping the film reach Indian audiences. Directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, The Voice of Hind Rajab has garnered significant international acclaim. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September, where it received an extended standing ovation and won the prestigious Silver Lion award. It later earned an Oscar nomination and has sparked discussions globally regarding the human costs of conflict. In the United States, it was eventually released by Willa after several distributors reportedly declined to take on the project.
