Bombay High Court Takes Action to Protect Ramayana from Piracy Ahead of Release
Legal Safeguards for Ramayana
The Bombay High Court has provided crucial legal safeguards for the highly anticipated film Ramayana, featuring stars Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, to combat piracy before its global release. Justice Madhav Jamdar issued this ruling in response to a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by God Power Media Private Limited, which holds the rights for the film's distribution both domestically and internationally. The court's order aims to prevent unauthorized recording, streaming, and distribution of the film, which is being produced with an impressive budget of ₹4,000 crore for its two-part format.
This legal move was initiated due to concerns over potential leaks, as the production team had previously reported that trailer footage was illicitly recorded and shared online, despite strict non-disclosure agreements enforced during private screenings. Justice Jamdar recognized the plaintiff's valid concerns, emphasizing the real risk of the film being illegally disseminated. As a result, the court has issued a dynamic injunction that applies to both known and unknown parties, equipping the filmmakers with a strong tool to fight against digital piracy as the release date nears.
Measures Against Digital Piracy
Enforcement Against Digital Platforms and ISPs
According to the court's ruling, internet service providers and major social media platforms are now required to remove or block pirated content upon receiving formal notifications from God Power Media. This initiative specifically targets the prevalent issue of mirror websites and platforms that re-upload content after initial takedown requests. Legal representatives for Google LLC and other involved platforms did not contest the request, affirming their readiness to act on verified copyright infringement complaints to protect intellectual property.
