Bobby Deol Reflects on Losing Role in Jab We Met to Shahid Kapoor
Bobby Deol Discusses His Experience with Jab We Met
The beloved romantic comedy Jab We Met, featuring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, has become a classic since its release in 2007, even enjoying a successful re-release in theaters. However, director Imtiaz Ali faced significant challenges in launching the film, including the decision to replace his initial lead, Bobby Deol, before production began. Recently, Bobby opened up about the impact of losing the role to Shahid and how it affected him, although he now maintains a friendship with the filmmaker.
How Bobby Deol Was Replaced in Jab We Met
During a conversation on Aap Ki Adalat, Bobby shared his admiration for Imtiaz after viewing his debut film Socha Na Tha, which starred his cousin, Abhay Deol. He expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with the promising director on a future project. That project turned out to be Jab We Met, where Bobby played a crucial role in introducing the film to various production companies and even brought Kareena on board. However, due to multiple delays, Bobby ultimately lost the role to Shahid, while both Imtiaz and Kareena remained attached to the project. The film significantly boosted the careers of both Shahid and Kareena, with its soundtrack also achieving immense popularity.
Bobby reflected on the experience, stating, "That story is done now. We’re friends. My heart got broken because I needed a film like this during that phase of my career." Despite the disappointment, he viewed the situation as a valuable lesson, acknowledging that such challenges are part of an artist's journey. He remarked, "These experiences have made me a better person and a better actor. I’ve only learned from them. I don’t have any qualms with anyone."
Bobby Deol's Upcoming Projects
Looking ahead, Bobby's next film is Bandar, directed by Anurag Kashyap, set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026. In this film, he portrays a renowned pop star named Sameer, who faces false accusations of rape from his ex-girlfriend. The cast also includes Sanya Malhotra, Sapna Pabbi, and Saba Azad.
Additionally, Bobby is involved in other projects, including Vijay's Jana Nayagan, which is yet to announce a release date, and he will star alongside Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in Yash Raj Films' spy thriller Alpha. This film, directed by Shiv Rawail, marks the first female-led entry in the YRF Spy Universe.
