A Sad Goodbye to a Cinematic Legend

The Indian film fraternity is in deep sorrow following the demise of renowned actor Nana Patekar, who left us on Friday morning at the age of 73. Known for his remarkable contributions to both Marathi and Hindi films, Patekar suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Dona Paula, Goa.

Dr. Shekhar Salkar from Manipal Hospital reported that emergency services were called early on Friday. It was revealed that Patekar had contacted a friend around 2:30 a.m. to share that he was feeling discomfort and pain on his left side. Unfortunately, by the time help arrived at 4:00 a.m., he was unresponsive. Despite immediate CPR efforts both at his residence and during transport to the hospital, he was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. The incident is being treated as a medico-legal case, with a post-mortem examination planned at Goa Medical College.

Reflections on His Life and Legacy

Patekar’s death comes shortly after his last public appearance on October 4, where he attended the installation ceremony for the new managing committee of the Samraat Club in Goa. During this event, he shared profound thoughts on life and the significance of civic duty, seemingly unaware that it would be one of his final public engagements.

In his address, Patekar spoke about the certainty of death, stating, “Everyone has to go one day. I don't know when my time will come, whether today or tomorrow, your time will come too.” He encouraged the audience to prioritize meaningful contributions to society over self-interest, asking, “Are you capable of doing what needs to be done before that? Are you making the effort? One needs to give back to society.”

Advocating for Respectful Dialogue

During the same event, Patekar emphasized the need for constructive criticism in public discourse. While expressing his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ideas, he stressed the importance of voicing disagreements respectfully. “If there is something I do not like, then it is certainly my duty to raise my voice about it. But there's also a manner in which one raises their voice. One must never use foul language about anyone,” he remarked.

Following the announcement of his passing, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant led the tributes, celebrating Patekar’s “remarkable journey across theatre, Hindi and Marathi cinema.” The Chief Minister acknowledged his “powerful performances and distinctive artistry,” noting that he had made a lasting impact on the Indian entertainment landscape. As the industry mourns, fans and colleagues remember Patekar for his compelling screen presence and his enduring ties to Goa.
