Kolkata, Apr 14: The Election Commission has confirmed that 2,926 candidates are competing in the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections after the nomination withdrawal period concluded on Tuesday.


As per the official announcement from the election authority, 1,478 candidates will vie for seats in 152 constituencies during the first phase, while 1,448 candidates are set to contest in 142 constituencies in the second phase.


A senior official from the Election Commission stated that the electoral machinery is fully prepared for the next steps.


"With the final candidate list established, returning officers will officially announce the candidates in the gazette as mandated by regulations," the official mentioned.


The commission has emphasized its commitment to transparency, enabling voters to view candidate information, including educational backgrounds, criminal records, and asset details, via the ECINet mobile app.


"To enhance voter awareness and accessibility, ballot units will feature colored photographs of candidates alongside their names and symbols in larger text," he added.


The deadline for submitting nominations for the second phase was April 9, with scrutiny conducted on April 10 and withdrawals allowed until April 13.


Voting for both phases is set for April 23 and 29, with officials prioritizing the smooth execution of the electoral process throughout the state.
