Agartala, June 13: In Tripura, between 20 and 25 applications have been submitted under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), with two individuals already receiving their Indian citizenship certificates. The remaining applications are currently undergoing verification.
Officials reported on Friday that the entire application process is managed through a specialized online portal, where a State-level committee reviews submissions based on district administration recommendations.
According to a senior official, "The verification process is conducted exclusively through the online platform, with applications processed according to the recommendations of authorized personnel. There is no offline method involved."
Sources indicated that most applications are still under review, with progress tracked via an online dashboard.
Recently, six applications reached the final scrutiny stage. Out of these, three were sent back for further examination due to identified discrepancies, while the other three were forwarded to the State-level committee. Consequently, two applicants associated with these cases were granted citizenship certificates.
Officials from North Tripura confirmed that the recently processed applications were submitted by local residents.
One successful applicant, Jhalak Das Chowdhury, met with the District Magistrate after receiving his citizenship certificate to finalize Aadhaar-related procedures. Another female applicant from the same district has also been granted citizenship.
The CAA offers a route to Indian citizenship for eligible individuals from specific communities who have migrated from certain neighboring countries under particular conditions.
This Act has previously incited significant protests throughout Tripura and other Northeastern states, with several petitions challenging its constitutional validity currently pending in the Supreme Court.
In related news, a road and rail blockade organized by a group of former militants and their supporters was lifted on Friday after the State Government assured them regarding their demands.
This resolution followed a visit by Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma to Sadhupada in the Baramura area, where he held an important meeting with the protesters alongside IGP Krishnendu Chakraborty.
