Sonapur, Oct 6: A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday when a family’s car collided with a roadside barrier on the Guwahati-Jagiroad highway, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to three others.

The victims have been identified as Ribul Ali, 18, Manimai Begum, 40, and Amir Uddin, 40, all hailing from Nonoi in the Nagaon district.

A traffic police official reported that initial accounts from local witnesses and a motorcyclist trailing the car indicated that the vehicle was traveling at a high speed prior to the incident.

“The car seemed to be speeding. It overtook a motorcycle just before crashing into the barrier, leading to the immediate deaths of three passengers,” the official stated.

The family was en route to Jagiroad from Guwahati when the accident took place. Rustam Ali, 50, was behind the wheel after dropping off his son at the airport, who was departing for work in Kuwait.

Rustam survived the crash, but his wife Manimai, son Ribul, and brother-in-law Amir died at the scene.

In addition, three others—Putumai Begum, 55, Anichu Sultana, 10, and Rustam—sustained injuries and were transported for medical care.

The impact of the crash was so severe that the metal roadside barrier penetrated the hatchback, which bore the registration number AS 01 DX 5663, and became lodged within the wreckage.

Rescue teams utilized a crane to lift the car along with the section of the barrier embedded in it while attempting to free the trapped occupants.

This incident has reignited concerns regarding road safety on the Khetri-Sonapur stretch, which has seen multiple serious accidents in recent weeks.

On August 31, seven individuals lost their lives, and many others were injured in a crash near Khetri in Dimoria.

A 26-seater vehicle traveling from Nagaon to Guwahati reportedly lost control after hitting a pothole, crossed the median, and collided with an oncoming truck in the Nalgedera area.

Following this, the National Highways Authority of India committed to repairing potholes along the Khanapara-Sonapur highway within a week.

Another incident involving a night bus traveling from Guwahati to Lakhimpur was reported near Khetri on September 1, where several passengers were injured after the bus lost control and veered off the road.

The frequency of these accidents has once again raised questions about the condition of the highway and the effectiveness of road safety measures.

According to data shared at a state-level road safety review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota on April 28, Assam recorded 4,219 road accidents and 1,008 fatalities from January to March 2026.
