Jorhat, June 20: New tensions have emerged in the border regions of Assam following an incident where road repair efforts in Mariani were reportedly interrupted by individuals from Nagaland, who asserted their claim over the land designated for the project.
This event took place in Ward No. 2 of Katani Gaon Panchayat, where workers were engaged in road repairs funded by a government initiative. Local residents reported that a group arrived at the site, objecting to the ongoing work and asserting ownership of the land.
The situation has raised alarms among residents of nearby villages, who have noted that such disputes have been ongoing for years, significantly hindering development in the area.
A worker at the site recounted that the laborers were compelled to cease their activities after being confronted. "We were in the midst of our work and had taken a brief break when two vehicles pulled up. About five individuals exited and informed us that we could not proceed because the land was theirs. They requested that we send representatives for discussions, stating that work could only resume after that," the worker claimed.
Community members indicated that this conflict is not a new occurrence and criticized previous administrations for their inability to address these recurring issues.
One resident expressed frustration, stating, "This has been a persistent problem. Such incidents have been occurring for many years, and it is the local populace that bears the brunt each time. We are disheartened that a permanent resolution has not been achieved despite numerous appeals. Our ancestors cultivated this land, and we have continued that legacy. Development projects like roads and public infrastructure should proceed without hindrance. We urge our elected officials and authorities to engage with all parties involved to find a lasting solution, allowing villagers to live without fear."
Another villager called on the Assam government to step in and ensure that development efforts are not obstructed.
"We request the Assam government to take swift action to resolve this issue so that villagers are not threatened and public works can continue. The road project has been stalled due to this incident. The community is anxious as similar confrontations have occurred previously. We hope that discussions between the involved parties and the administration will lead to a peaceful resolution and allow work to resume," the resident stated.
Locals noted that the road project aimed to enhance connectivity in the region and had provided employment opportunities for many villagers. They are concerned that ongoing disruptions could jeopardize both their livelihoods and broader development efforts.
This incident has once again highlighted the persistent disputes and periodic tensions reported along the Assam-Nagaland border. Residents are urging the district administration and state government to act swiftly to prevent further escalation and ensure that development projects are completed without interference.
