Guwahati, May 8: On Friday, Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent leader of the BJP, was elected as the head of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal, marking a historic step towards him potentially becoming the state's first chief minister from the BJP.


His nomination was put forward during a meeting of the legislature party in Kolkata, with the announcement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was accompanied by newly elected BJP MLAs and senior party officials.


This development follows the BJP's remarkable success in the West Bengal Assembly elections, which ended a long-standing era of regional party dominance in the state.


Adhikari, a pivotal figure in Bengal's political landscape, significantly contributed to the party's campaign and organizational efforts throughout the state. His rise to this prominent position is viewed as a crucial political milestone for the BJP in eastern India.


Following the announcement, party leaders and supporters celebrated, with BJP workers gathering outside the venue, chanting slogans in favor of Adhikari and the party leadership.


The inauguration ceremony for the new BJP government is set to take place at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on May 9, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leaders, and chief ministers from BJP-led states expected to be present.
