Re-voting in South 24 Parganas
On Saturday, re-voting took place at 15 polling booths across two assembly constituencies in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. By 5 PM, the turnout was reported to exceed 86% in the Magrahat West constituency and nearly 88% in Diamond Harbour. This re-vote was ordered by the election commission following reports of electoral irregularities.
According to the election commission, by 3 PM, over 72% of votes had been cast across the 15 booths in both constituencies. The re-voting process remained peaceful at 11 booths in Magrahat West and four in Diamond Harbour.
Voting commenced at 7 AM and continued until 6 PM. By 3 PM, the voter turnout was recorded at 72.43%. Specifically, Magrahat West saw a turnout of 72.50%, while Diamond Harbour recorded 72.36%. The initial voting for these seats occurred on April 29 during the second phase, but complaints of irregularities led to the decision for a re-vote.
Protests at a Polling Booth
During the re-voting, a protest erupted at booth number 179 in Chanda Primary School, located in the Diamond Harbour constituency. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) accused central forces of harassing a disabled voter and his mother. They claimed that the central forces detained the woman's son for an extended period, prompting party workers and local residents to demonstrate.
Candidates in the Fray
In the Magrahat West constituency, the BJP has fielded Gaurasundar Ghosh, who faces competition from TMC's Mohammad Shami Ahmed Molla. The Congress has nominated Abdul Majid Halder, while the Indian Secular Front (ISF) has put forward Abdul Aziz Al Hasan. In Diamond Harbour, TMC's candidate is Panna Lal Halder, who is up against BJP's Deepak Kumar Halder. The Congress has selected Gautam Bhattacharya, and the CPM has chosen Samar Naya as their candidate.
