Ranchi's Anti-Encroachment Drive Sparks Protests Among Residents
Major Anti-Encroachment Operation in Ranchi
Ranchi, Sep 15: On Tuesday, the district administration initiated a significant anti-encroachment operation aimed at removing illegal structures from land owned by the Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) and the Railways.
This move incited large-scale protests from hundreds of residents impacted by the eviction.
Multiple JCB machines were employed simultaneously to dismantle constructions on the contested land, while a substantial police presence was established to ensure order during the operation.
Numerous residents, whose homes were at risk due to the drive, took to the streets in protest, claiming that the administration had begun the eviction process without providing adequate rehabilitation options.
Since the early hours of Tuesday, officials have been using loudspeakers to urge residents to voluntarily vacate their homes and other structures on Railway and HEC land.
Authorities cautioned that any structures not removed by their occupants would be demolished using heavy machinery.
The operation resulted in panic within the community, with many families hurriedly relocating their belongings to safer locations. The situation also led to significant unrest, as numerous women, men, and children gathered on the streets to voice their opposition to the drive.
Protesters expressed that they had resided in the area for many years, and the abrupt action jeopardized their homes and livelihoods.
Some residents claimed they had not received clear communication regarding rehabilitation or alternative housing before being instructed to leave.
Despite the protests, the administration asserted that the operation was being carried out in line with established procedures to reclaim government land belonging to the Railways and HEC.
Officials indicated that sufficient security measures were in place, with additional police personnel deployed at sensitive sites to avert any incidents.
The administration confirmed that the drive to eliminate illegal encroachments from Railway and HEC land would persist, with magistrates and adequate police forces on standby to manage any situation.
Nonetheless, tension remained high in the area, with authorities closely observing the developments.
