Guwahati, May 5: Following a historic mandate for the BJP-led NDA in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the forthcoming swearing-in ceremony, with the date to be finalized based on his availability.
Sarma reminisced about the 2021 government formation, noting that the Prime Minister was unable to attend due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“This time, the Assam BJP unit is eager for his presence. If his visit is confirmed, we will set the oath-taking dates accordingly. Therefore, we may need an additional two to three days for discussions regarding the ceremony,” he stated.
He further mentioned that the decision regarding the oath-taking event would be made by BJP national president Nitin Nabin. “He will appoint observers, select cabinet ministers, and then the process will proceed to the Governor,” Sarma explained.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that the alliance's final results closely aligned with his pre-election predictions.
Detailing his analysis, Sarma indicated that after delimitation, approximately 103 Assembly constituencies were identified where the BJP anticipated favorable demographic support.
“From the outset, I had predicted that Sivasagar would not be ours. Other than that, there were no additional seats among those 103 where we expected to lose. Hence, the number came to 102,” he remarked.
Sarma disclosed that he had documented this projected figure before the results were announced.
“I had noted down 102 seats and shared it with Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, who showcased it in Jorhat on Monday. Even Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had indicated we would secure around 100 seats,” he added.
Rejecting any notion of mere speculation, Sarma credited the precision of his estimate to thorough grassroots engagement during the campaign.
“When you traverse constituencies and participate in meetings, you can gauge from public reactions whether you are winning or losing. It’s not magic,” he asserted.
Contrasting his efforts with those of Opposition leaders, Sarma claimed that extensive outreach made a significant difference.
“I have visited every constituency with our candidates at least three times since August 2025. By analyzing the public's warmth during these visits, the numbers become evident,” he stated.
Taking a jab at Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, he remarked: “Throughout this election, he attended around 30 meetings, while we were consistently on the ground.”
With the NDA poised to form the government once more, attention now turns to leadership formalities and the swearing-in ceremony, which could feature a prominent presence if the Prime Minister's attendance is confirmed.
