Political Turmoil in Bhawanipur

On Thursday, a political confrontation unfolded in Bhawanipur, West Bengal, involving activists from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP members obstructed a TMC vehicle, alleging that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was transporting something illicit in it. The situation escalated into chaos, with the vehicle unable to proceed for an extended period until police intervened.

This incident coincided with TMC's allegations against the Election Commission regarding tampering with postal ballots. TMC officials claimed that BJP workers and Election Commission representatives attempted to open postal ballots without the presence of TMC observers.

Reasons Behind the Political Clash

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh accused officials of manipulating ballots inside the strong room, asserting that their party representatives were absent during this critical time. In response, Mamata Banerjee personally visited the counting center at the Sakawat Memorial School, where the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and postal ballots were stored.

Election Commission Denies Allegations

The Election Commission dismissed these claims. Manoj Kumar Agrawal, the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, stated that live footage from all eight strong rooms was being broadcast continuously, allowing all parties to monitor the situation.

TMC Questions Election Commission's Integrity

Manoj Kumar emphasized that the strong room containing postal ballots was opened in accordance with regulations, and all candidates and parties were notified in advance. He assured that the counting process would be conducted in a completely transparent and fair manner, despite TMC's ongoing concerns regarding the Election Commission.
