Shillong, Oct 12: During the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Meghalaya, the names of two foreign nationals have been removed from the voter list. Additionally, 2,641 individuals from a total of over 21 lakh electors have been found ineligible for the final electoral roll.

The draft voters list, published in August, recorded 21,69,243 electors, a decrease from the previous count of 23,49,645. The final electoral rolls are set to be released on October 26. Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari confirmed that the two foreigners were identified in Mawsynram, located in East Khasi Hills, and subsequently removed from the list.

Furthermore, the revision process uncovered 406 duplicate entries, which Tiwari referred to as instances of dual voting. The breakdown of these duplicates by district includes 113 in North Garo Hills, 63 in East Garo Hills, 64 in West Garo Hills, 37 in East Khasi Hills, 35 in West Khasi Hills, and 27 in Eastern West Khasi Hills, totaling 339, with 67 entries remaining unaccounted for.

Among the 2,641 electors deemed ineligible, 420 did not provide the necessary documentation, while 129 failed to attend hearings. Some electors could not be located within the required timeframe, according to Tiwari.

Recent statistics indicate that 6,51,735 notices were issued during the SIR, which included 2,22,786 cases of voters who could not be matched with the previous electoral roll and 4,28,949 cases with discrepancies in mapping.

Hearings for 6,21,399 notices, representing 95.35 percent, have been finalized. The draft electoral roll lists 21,69,243 electors, with 20,86,026 marked for inclusion in the final list.

During the revision, the Election Department processed and digitized 28,627 applications, which included 17,248 for name inclusion, 1,963 for deletions or objections, 1,673 for residence changes, and 7,743 for corrections.

The department has encouraged voters to check their names in the final roll via their Booth Level Officers or the Voters’ Service Portal.
