Mamata Banerjee Faces Defeat in West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026

Mamata Banerjee's Setback in the Elections

In the recent assembly elections, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has suffered another defeat. This time, she was outperformed by Suvendu Adhikari, who had previously defeated her in Nandigram, as he claimed victory in Bhawanipur. Alongside Banerjee, several ministers and key figures from her government also faced electoral losses, resulting in the Trinamool Congress (TMC) winning less than a hundred seats, a stark contrast to their previous tally of over 200 seats.


While some ministers from Banerjee's administration managed to secure wins, many, including prominent names like Malay Ghatak and Shashi Panja, lost in their respective constituencies.


Election Results Overview

In her home constituency of Bhawanipur, Mamata Banerjee lost to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of 15,105 votes. However, several ministers, including Shovandev Chattopadhyay, Firhad Hakim, and Javed Khan, emerged victorious in their seats. Javed Khan achieved his fourth consecutive win from the Kasba constituency in South Kolkata, defeating BJP's Sandip Mukherjee by 20,974 votes. Meanwhile, Shovandev Chattopadhyay secured a significant victory in the prestigious Ballygunge seat, winning against his closest rival from the BJP by 61,476 votes.


Firhad Hakim, the Mayor of Kolkata and former Urban Development Minister, also retained his seat at Kolkata Port, defeating BJP's Rakesh Singh by over 56,000 votes. TMC MP Sudip Bandopadhyay's wife, Nayana Bandopadhyay, won the Chaurangi seat, beating BJP candidate Santosh Pathak by 22,002 votes.


Notable Losses

Among the notable losses for the TMC, Minister Uday Guha lost the Dinahata seat to BJP's Ajay Rai by over 17,000 votes. Additionally, Women and Child Welfare Minister Shashi Panja was defeated by BJP's Purnima Chakraborty in the Shyampukur constituency, losing by 14,633 votes. Malay Ghatak, who had previously won the Asansol North seat three times, was also defeated by BJP's Krishnendu Mukherjee by 11,615 votes.


Election Statistics

Out of the 294 assembly seats in West Bengal, results for 293 have been declared, with one seat in Falta set for re-voting. The BJP has secured a commanding majority with 207 seats, while the TMC has managed to win only 80 seats. The Congress and the Left alliance each won two seats.
