Lionel Scaloni Affirms Messi's Control Over International Future
Messi's Decision on International Retirement
Lionel Scaloni, the head coach of Argentina, has stated that Lionel Messi will ultimately determine when he steps back from international football. As preparations for the expanded 2026 World Cup are underway, Scaloni highlighted that Messi's future is shaped by his exceptional mindset and unyielding desire for success.
In an interview with a local media outlet, Scaloni downplayed any worries regarding Messi's potential retirement before the upcoming tournament. The forward, currently with Inter Miami, is set to make his sixth World Cup appearance, and Scaloni affirmed that the choice lies solely with Messi. "He will continue to play as long as he wishes because we know his capabilities, and it’s no surprise that he is participating in his sixth World Cup," Scaloni stated.
Despite having achieved every significant accolade, including four international titles in recent years, Messi's competitive spirit remains as strong as ever. Scaloni pointed out that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner still exhibits frustration over minor issues during club games, showcasing his relentless pursuit of excellence. "He remains the best because he is always striving for more and demonstrates that desire," the coach added.
This intense ambition drives Messi to never settle, consistently motivating himself and his teammates to reach new heights. Scaloni believes this mental advantage is what keeps Messi at the top of his game, even after years of success.
With ongoing discussions about how Argentina will manage Messi's playing time in the new tournament format, Scaloni emphasized that all decisions are made in consultation with Messi. He highlighted the mutual respect in their relationship, noting that Messi's presence on the field—regardless of his fitness level—is invaluable. "Every decision we make is discussed with him. It’s pointless for me to claim I decide alone; in his case, and rightly so, I will always consult him and see if we can come to an agreement," Scaloni explained.
The coach elaborated that Messi's impact goes beyond his physical abilities. Even during challenging times, his presence instills confidence and motivation in his teammates. "Sometimes, it’s even more beneficial that he faces difficulties because of the energy he brings," Scaloni remarked.
