Located to the east of Alappuzha district in South Kerala, Pathanamthitta shares its borders with Tamil Nadu and is also adjacent to Kottayam, Idukki, and Kollam. This district is home to the renowned and often controversial Sabarimala Temple, earning it the title of Kerala's pilgrimage capital. Known for its lush forests, architectural schools, and numerous churches, Pathanamthitta is expected to be a focal point in the upcoming elections.


Political Dynamics in Pathanamthitta

In this district, which has traditionally been dominated by the Left, the BJP is making significant efforts to establish its presence. The party aims to secure a foothold before Congress attempts a comeback by defeating the Left. This has made Pathanamthitta a hotbed of political activity in recent years, often referred to as the land of Lord Ayyappa.


Demographics and Economy

According to the 2011 census, the district has a population comprising 57% Hindus, 38% Christians, and around 5% Muslims. It is one of the few districts experiencing negative population growth. Pathanamthitta is well-known for its agriculture, particularly rice, vegetables, fruits, and spices, and is also recognized for rubber cultivation. Approximately 50% of the district's area is covered by forests, contributing to its reputation for timber production.


2021 Election Recap

The 2021 assembly elections were challenging for the UDF in this district, as they failed to win any seats in Pathanamthitta despite putting up a strong fight. The Left coalition benefited from this situation, with prominent leader Veena George successfully retaining her seat. The BJP also garnered a notable number of votes, indicating a competitive landscape for the upcoming elections.


Historical Context of Assembly Seats

Thiruvalla: This assembly seat is part of the Pathanamthitta district. Matthew T. Thomas, a leader from the Janata Dal (Secular), has been the MLA for four consecutive terms and is contesting again under the Indian Socialist Janata Dal (ISJD) banner. He faces competition from Varghese Mammen of the Kerala Congress (Joseph). The BJP has fielded Anoop Antony here, who previously received a substantial number of votes.


Ranni: This seat has been under the Left coalition's control for a long time. After five consecutive wins by Raju Abraham, the Left has nominated Pramod Narayan from the Kerala Congress (M) to contest. The Congress, which has faced narrow defeats in recent elections, has replaced its candidate with P. Madhu against Narayan. T.K. Samuel from the 20-20 party is also in the fray.


Aranmula: Veena George of the Left has won this seat in the last two elections. The current Health Minister is contesting again, while the Congress has nominated A.V. Kodyattu, replacing the previous candidate K. Shivadasan Nair. The BJP has given a ticket to K. Rajasekharan, a former Mizoram governor.


Adur: This constituency is reserved for Scheduled Castes. After four consecutive wins by Congress, the Left has claimed victory in the last three elections. The Left has nominated P. Kannan, while Congress has chosen C.P. Shantakumar. The BJP has again fielded Advocate P. Prathapan.


Konni: The Left has taken control of this constituency, which was previously held by Congress for five consecutive elections. After Adoor Prakash became an MP in 2019, the seat shifted to the Left. In the 2019 by-election, the Left's K.U. Jenish Kumar defeated Congress's P. Mohanraj. This time, the Left has re-nominated Jenish Kumar, while Congress has put forward Professor Satish Kochuparambil.
