Guwahati, Apr 11: The Assembly elections in Assam have garnered significant international attention, with delegates from various countries praising the event as a genuine celebration of democracy due to its scale, inclusivity, and smooth execution.

A 38-member delegation representing 22 nations participated in the Election Commission of India’s IEVP 2026 initiative, observing the electoral process firsthand in Assam.

While in Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup (Rural), the delegates evaluated crucial elements of election management, including the logistics of dispatch and distribution centers, the movement of election personnel and materials, and compliance with established protocols.

They engaged with Chief Electoral Officers and law enforcement officials to review security measures in place.

On the day of voting, the delegates observed mock elections before visiting polling stations to witness the voting process.

They commended the inclusive features at polling locations, such as ramps, wheelchairs, volunteer assistance, and crèche facilities, along with polling stations operated by women and individuals with disabilities.

“Inclusivity of highest order,” stated Fahima Araphat Abdallah from Kenya, while Paulus Shigwedha from Namibia expressed, “We are very impressed with how the polling stations have been organised, the facilities have been prepared very well.”

In Kamrup (Rural), the delegates also acknowledged voter-centric initiatives like health check-up services at polling stations, emphasizing the commitment to accessibility and welfare.

They visited media monitoring centers and participated in tree-planting activities at polling sites, showcasing the integration of eco-friendly practices within the electoral process.

The use of technology and monitoring systems, including complete webcasting of polling stations and CCTV control rooms, was praised as a “strong pillar of transparency.”

The enthusiasm and scale of the electoral process left a lasting impression on the visiting delegates. “Indian voting… this is a true festival of democracy for the whole world… what is overwhelming for me is enthusiasm of people to vote,” remarked Branimir Farkas from Croatia.

Uuc-Kib Espadas Ancona from Mexico echoed similar thoughts, stating, “The process of election in India is certainly a place to learn,” while Abubakarr Mahmoud Koroma from Sierra Leone described the use of EVMs as making the experience “like a festival.”

The delegates expressed their gratitude to the Election Commission of India for its dedication to transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency.

The IEVP, a key initiative of the electoral body, aims to promote international collaboration and highlight India’s electoral framework and best practices.
