Silchar, Nov 7: The High Court Bench Demand Implementation Committee has recently submitted a new memorandum to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, urging for prompt consideration and approval of the proposed permanent High Court bench in Barak Valley.
This memorandum was presented through Cachar District Commissioner Rahul Kumar Gupta during a peaceful assembly organized by the committee on Saturday.
Dhruba Kumar Saha, the committee's president in Cachar district and an advocate, stated that the demand has reached a pivotal point following various developments at both governmental and judicial levels over the last seven months.
“The State government had referred the issue to the Chief Secretary, who has also supported the demand. The Chief Secretary then forwarded the proposal to the Law Department, which subsequently sent it to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court for review,” Saha explained.
In their memorandum, the committee highlighted the necessity for accessible, affordable, and swift justice for residents of Barak Valley and Dima Hasao, pointing out the significant distance from the main seat of the High Court.
The committee also mentioned the recent establishment of a permanent High Court bench in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh at Leh, expressing hope that Barak Valley and Dima Hasao would receive similar attention.
They urged the Chief Justice to present the proposal to the relevant Administrative Committee for prompt consideration and approval, which would enable the State government to commence the necessary formalities.
This development occurs just before the High Court’s Administrative Committee meeting set for November 11, where the proposal is anticipated to be discussed.
Previously, the committee had met with the Chief Justice, who assured them that the proposal would be reviewed by the appropriate Administrative Committee within two months.
Although that timeframe has passed, Saha mentioned that they have received reliable information indicating that the proposal will be addressed on November 11.
“We remain optimistic that the outcome will favor this long-standing public demand,” he stated.
The committee noted that the demand has transformed into a widespread public movement, garnering support from various segments of society throughout Barak Valley and Dima Hasao.
They reiterated their commitment to pursuing the demand through peaceful and constitutional avenues.
