Introduction to Purba Bardhaman

Purba Bardhaman is one of the 23 districts in West Bengal, with its administrative center located in the city of Bardhaman. This district was formed in 2017 when the older Bardhaman district was divided into two parts, leading to the establishment of Purba Bardhaman. Known for its historical, cultural, and agricultural significance, Purba Bardhaman shares borders with six districts: Hooghly, Bankura, Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia.


Historical Background

Historically, this region was part of the 'Rarh' area, which was under the Mughal Empire during medieval times. Following the decline of the Mughals, it came under the control of the British East India Company. The name Bardhaman is believed to signify a prosperous center of development, symbolizing the Aryanization of the upper Ganges valley.


Bardhaman has been a notable part of ancient Bengal. Inscriptions from the 6th century indicate that it was a prominent region, referred to as Radha or Radhadesh during that era. The area became part of the Maurya Empire, and later, the Varman dynasty rose to power in the late 3rd century. Chandravarman is often regarded as the king of Bardhaman, followed by the Gupta dynasty with Vinay Gupta as its ruler. Subsequently, Shashanka, the first independent king of Bengal, and Jaynaga governed the region.


Agricultural Significance

Purba Bardhaman is often referred to as the rice bowl of West Bengal, with rice being the primary crop cultivated here. The district also produces substantial quantities of potatoes and wheat. The fertile soil and canal irrigation system significantly bolster agricultural productivity. Besides agriculture, small enterprises are emerging as vital contributors to the local economy.

The district comprises four subdivisions: Bardhaman Sadar (North), Bardhaman Sadar (South), Katwa, and Kalna. Additionally, there are 23 blocks, including Ausgram-I, Ausgram-II, Galsi-I, Galsi-II, Khandaghosh, Bardhaman-I, Bardhaman-II, Bhatar, Raina-I, Raina-II, Jamalpur, Memari-I, Memari-II, Monteswar, Mongolkot, Ketugram-I, Ketugram-II, Katwa-I, Katwa-II, Purba Sthali-I, Purba Sthali-II, Kalna-I, and Kalna-II.


Legislative Assembly Seats

Purba Bardhaman has a total of 15 legislative assembly seats, including Khandaghosh (SC), Bardhaman Dakshin, Raina (SC), Jamalpur (SC), Monteswar, Kalna (SC), Memari, Bardhaman Uttar (SC), Bhatar, Purba Sthali Dakshin, Purba Sthali Uttar, Katwa, Ketugram, Mongolkot, Ausgram (SC), and Galsi (SC). All these seats fall under the Purba Bardhaman Lok Sabha constituency.


In the previous 2021 elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) achieved a sweeping victory, winning all 15 assembly seats, while the BJP secured the second position in each.


Demographics

The population of Purba Bardhaman primarily consists of Hindus and Muslims, with 73.75% identifying as Hindu and 25.14% as Muslim. The majority of residents speak Bengali, although Santali and Hindi are also commonly spoken.


Cultural and Religious Sites

The district is home to several notable religious sites, including the Sarvamangala Temple, Rajbari Complex in Kalna, and terracotta temples. Durga Puja is celebrated with great enthusiasm in this region.


Social Fabric

According to the 2011 census, Purba Bardhaman has a total population of 4,835,532, with 51.07% male and 48.93% female residents. The sex ratio stands at 890 females for every 1,000 males.


Political Landscape

In the 2021 assembly elections, the TMC dominated by winning all 15 seats with significant margins. Purba Bardhaman is one of the districts where the TMC has a stronghold, making it challenging for the BJP to make inroads. The TMC has consistently won Lok Sabha elections since 2014, indicating a robust political presence in the region.
