Congress Grapples with Election Loss in Assam

Following a disappointing outcome in the Assam Assembly elections, the Congress party is experiencing significant internal upheaval. On Tuesday, Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam unit of Congress, held a press conference where he accepted moral responsibility for the party's defeat. He emphasized that, as the captain, he takes full accountability for the loss while affirming that their fight for the rights and dignity of the people will continue.

Acknowledging Support and Commitment

Gogoi expressed gratitude to those who supported the party, stating, 'We respect the people's mandate. We thank those who voted for us and supported our cause. Congress will reach out to those who did not vote for us. We are grateful to our grassroots workers who stood by us despite challenges. We have witnessed a new Congress emerge.'

Congress Secures Only 19 Seats

In the 126-member Assam Assembly, Congress managed to secure just 19 seats, marking its worst performance in the state to date. Previously, the party had won 26 seats. Gaurav Gogoi himself lost his seat in the Jorhat constituency, defeated by BJP's Hitendra Nath Goswami by over 23,000 votes.

Gogoi's Remarks on Leadership

Gogoi further stated, 'I extend my thanks to Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Jitendra Singh, and other Congress leaders. We did not achieve the expected number of seats, but we will continue to provide our suggestions for Assam's development both inside and outside the Assembly. We will always stand with the common people of Assam.'

Upcoming Meeting with Newly Elected Legislators

He noted that the public has not accepted the election results. 'We anticipated a close contest, but the results in many constituencies are thought-provoking.' Gogoi announced that a meeting with the newly elected legislators will take place on Saturday, May 9.

Taking Responsibility and Future Plans

As the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress, Gogoi reiterated his moral responsibility for the defeat. He assured that the party would remain steadfast in the ideological battle and continue to fight for the rights and dignity of the people. He expressed readiness to fulfill any responsibilities assigned by the party leadership in the future.

Analyzing the Reasons for Defeat

Gogoi mentioned that Congress would analyze the reasons behind its defeat and return to the public with a stronger team. A three-time MP, he had previously won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general elections. He affirmed that Congress would play a responsible opposition role in line with the public mandate, supporting the government's positive initiatives while opposing anti-people policies.
