Assam's Gram Panchayats Shine at National Panchayat Awards 2025

Assam has made a remarkable impact at the National Panchayat Awards 2025, securing three prestigious honors for its gram panchayats. The awards recognize outstanding achievements in sanitation, infrastructure, and rural governance. Notably, the New Napam Gram Panchayat in Sonitpur district topped the national rankings, while Jumarmur and Hoogrijan gram panchayats also received accolades for their innovative approaches to community development. These awards highlight the importance of grassroots governance and the efforts made towards sustainable development in rural areas. The ceremony will take place in New Delhi on June 3, celebrating the exemplary work of local self-governance institutions across the country.
 

Assam's Recognition in National Panchayat Awards

Guwahati, May 16: Assam has achieved significant recognition by securing three awards at the National Panchayat Awards 2025, as announced by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj. The gram panchayats from Nagaon, Dibrugarh, and Sonitpur districts have been honored for their outstanding contributions in sanitation, infrastructure, and overall rural governance.


The awards, which fall under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (DDUPSVP) and the esteemed Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (NDSPSVP), will be presented during a ceremony in New Delhi on June 3.


Among the notable winners, the New Napam Gram Panchayat in Sonitpur district has achieved the top national position in the NDSPSVP category for Best Gram Panchayat, earning an award of Rs 1.50 crore.


This recognition highlights excellence in grassroots governance, rural infrastructure, service delivery, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and the effective implementation of flagship schemes.


In the Clean & Green Panchayat category under DDUPSVP, Jumarmur Gram Panchayat in Nagaon district secured a joint second position, receiving Rs 37.50 lakh.


Hoogrijan Gram Panchayat in Dibrugarh district also excelled, achieving second place in the Self-Sufficient Infrastructure in Panchayat category, with an award of Rs 75 lakh.


The Ministry noted that Jumarmur Gram Panchayat, which serves a population of 6,032 across 1,245 households, has successfully implemented decentralized solid and liquid waste management systems in all wards, along with waste segregation and composting initiatives.


Additionally, the panchayat has conducted plantation drives in public areas and along roadsides, ensuring ODF Plus status and universal sanitation coverage. Community involvement through self-help groups and youth organizations was emphasized as a crucial factor in their success.


Hoogrijan Gram Panchayat, with a population of 4,512 and 1,038 households, was recognized for enhancing rural infrastructure by constructing all-weather roads, drainage systems, public buildings, and community assets.


This panchayat has also developed internet-enabled citizen service facilities, improved connectivity, and expanded street lighting through collaborative project implementation.


The awards aim to acknowledge the exemplary efforts of Panchayati Raj Institutions nationwide in achieving sustainable development goals and reinforcing local self-governance.
