Guwahati, April 9: The electoral landscape of Assam is poised for a significant showdown today as the polling for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections kicks off at 7 am, lasting until 6 pm across all 126 constituencies. The counting of votes and announcement of results are scheduled for May 4.
This election marks a departure from the previous Assembly elections held in three phases in 2021, as this year’s voting will occur in a single phase. Over 2.5 crore voters are anticipated to participate in what is regarded as one of the most scrutinized political contests in the Northeast region.
The last Assembly elections in 2021 saw a remarkable voter turnout of 82.04 percent, with the BJP-led NDA successfully securing 75 out of 126 seats to maintain its governance.
In preparation for the elections, election officials finalized logistical arrangements on Wednesday, which included the distribution of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), ballot units, VVPATs, and other polling materials to the assigned personnel. The EVMs have been fully commissioned across all constituencies, with numerous ballot units, control units, and VVPAT machines ready for use.
Heightened security measures have been implemented throughout the state, with polling staff and law enforcement deployed in sensitive areas to ensure a smooth voting process and uphold law and order during the election day.
As Assam embarks on this pivotal election day that will influence the state’s political trajectory for the next five years, attention will be focused on voter turnout, critical battleground constituencies, and the general atmosphere among the electorate.
