Guwahati, October 11: On Sunday, the Assam government issued appointment letters to 439 individuals across different departments, raising the total number of government jobs created during the two terms of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to 1,65,749.
During a ceremony at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that these new appointments are a step towards fulfilling the commitment of providing two lakh government jobs.
“This marks the second occasion in Assam, and the first since the BJP and its allies took office after the Assembly elections, that we have convened for the distribution of appointment letters,” Sarma remarked.
He noted that over 1.65 lakh government positions have been filled from 2021 to 2026, with plans for continued recruitment in the next five years.
The recent appointments span various departments and institutions, including Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd, Labour Welfare, Public Health Engineering (PHE), and Water Resources.
“The recruitment process in Assam is transparent and fair, allowing us to celebrate these achievements with the candidates and their families,” he stated.
Focusing on the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank, Sarma highlighted its recovery from financial troubles and the preservation of its Reserve Bank of India (RBI) license. He mentioned that the bank has successfully hired around 175 individuals, following 526 appointments made during the previous term.
Additionally, the Chief Minister announced the hiring of 12 insurance medical officers for Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospitals.
He pointed out that the Labour Welfare Department has filled 338 vacancies in the last five years.
In the Public Health Engineering Department, 184 junior engineers are set to be appointed, with Sarma underscoring the department's vital role in ensuring safe drinking water and executing initiatives like the Jal Jeevan Mission.
He also mentioned that 1,173 appointments were made in this department during the previous term.
In the Water Resources Department, plans for recruitment include 870 assistant engineers in civil and mechanical disciplines, along with 16 junior engineers. The department had previously employed 2,815 candidates.
Sarma noted that increased government investment in infrastructure, such as roads and drinking water projects, has opened up opportunities for engineering graduates and diploma holders who previously faced recruitment uncertainties.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister revealed that the state government has expedited promotions for current employees over the past six months, which will create more entry-level positions and facilitate the advancement of younger staff into senior roles, ensuring institutional continuity.
Earlier, while addressing rallies in Barak Valley on April 3, Sarma had pledged two lakh government jobs and announced plans to create additional co-districts in the area.
This employment promise is part of the ruling party's broader campaign strategy ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
