Guwahati, May 6: In a striking contrast to the ongoing concerns regarding the criminalization of politics, all ten candidates from the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) who emerged victorious in the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 have reported no criminal charges against themselves. This information comes from a study conducted by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Assam Election Watch.
This finding is particularly noteworthy as the overall election results reveal that 21 out of 126 winning candidates, which is 17 percent, have declared criminal cases against them. Among these, 19 candidates, or 15 percent, are facing serious allegations.
In comparison, the previous Assembly elections in 2021 saw a higher incidence of such cases, with 34 MLAs, or 27 percent, declaring criminal charges, including 28 candidates, or 22 percent, with serious accusations.
The ADR's report, which is based on an analysis of the self-sworn affidavits submitted by all winning candidates, indicates that among those with declared cases, three MLAs are facing charges related to attempted murder, while two have allegations connected to crimes against women.
A breakdown by party reveals significant differences. Among the major parties, 9 out of 19 Congress winners, or 47 percent, have reported criminal cases, while only 7 out of 82 BJP MLAs, or 9 percent, have done so. All winning candidates from AIUDF (2), AITC (1), and Raijor Dal (1 out of 2) have declared criminal cases, while 1 out of 10 AGP MLAs, or 10 percent, reported such cases.
A similar pattern is observed for serious charges, with 7 Congress MLAs (37 percent) and 7 BJP MLAs (9 percent) declaring serious allegations, alongside full representation from smaller parties like AIUDF and AITC.
In addition to criminal records, the report highlights a significant increase in the wealth of elected representatives. A total of 107 candidates, or 85 percent, of the 126 winning candidates are crorepatis, a rise from 67 percent in 2021.
Party-wise, the BJP leads with 74 crorepati MLAs, followed by Congress with 14. The BPF has 8 crorepati legislators, while all MLAs from AIUDF, Raijor Dal, and AITC also fall into the crorepati category.
The average assets of the winning candidates have surged to Rs 8.82 crore, nearly doubling from Rs 4.59 crore in 2021, and showing a steep increase from Rs 2.45 crore in 2016 and Rs 1.65 crore in 2011.
Among the parties, AIUDF MLAs reported the highest average assets at Rs 117.77 crore, followed by BPF at Rs 9.92 crore, BJP at Rs 7.50 crore, and Congress at Rs 6.51 crore.
