Record Voter Turnout in Assembly Elections Across Three States
High Voter Participation in Assembly Elections
The assembly elections in three states witnessed an impressive voter turnout. In Assam, the voting percentage increased by 3.17% compared to the previous election. Kerala recorded a turnout of 77.45%, up from 74.06% in the last election. Puducherry led the way with a remarkable 86.93% turnout across all 30 seats. Following the conclusion of voting, the fate of 1,849 candidates is now sealed in the electronic voting machines (EVMs). Results for these states, along with West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, will be announced on May 4.
Kerala Breaks Previous Voting Record
Voting in Kerala concluded on Thursday at 6 PM for all 140 seats. According to the Election Commission's data released at 7 PM, the state achieved a voter turnout of 77.45%, surpassing the 74.06% recorded in 2021. The voting process was largely peaceful, although there were delays of about 30 minutes at two polling booths due to EVM issues.
The main contest in Kerala is between the United Democratic Front (UDF) led by Congress, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP, and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by CPI(M). The LDF aims for a third consecutive victory, while the UDF seeks to return to power after a decade. The NDA's growing influence has made the contest a triangular one. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan cast his vote at a booth in Kannur district, stating that this election will determine Kerala's developmental trajectory.
Assam Sees High Turnout in Minority-Dominated Seats
Voting in Assam's 126 assembly seats concluded at 5 PM, with a turnout of 85.21%, an increase from 82.04% in 2021. Officials noted that this figure could rise further as they are still counting those who entered polling booths before closing time.
In the 16 minority-dominated seats, voter turnout exceeded 90%. Additionally, 83 seats recorded between 80-89%, while the remaining areas saw turnout between 70-79%. The highest turnout was in the Dalgaon constituency, with 95.53%, while the lowest was in the New Guwahati constituency at 72.05%.
The primary contest in Assam is between the BJP and Congress, with the fate of 722 candidates now resting in the EVMs. The BJP aims to make history with a third consecutive term, while Congress is determined to make a comeback.
Puducherry Records 86.93% Voter Turnout
In Puducherry, voting was peaceful across all 30 assembly seats, with 86.93% of the electorate participating. This figure may increase as the final counts are tallied. Voting began at 7 AM and concluded at 6 PM. During the voting period, clashes occurred between BJP and Congress workers in Thirukanur village, prompting police intervention.
Chief Minister N. Rangasamy is contesting from both Thattanchavadi and Mangalam assembly seats. In Thattanchavadi, he faces off against Puducherry Congress President and Lok Sabha MP V. Vaithilingam, while in Mangalam, he is challenged by DMK leader R. Shiva Vilianur.
