Raijor Dal Responds to Congress Alliance Termination

Guwahati, Sept 3: On Thursday, Raijor Dal responded to the Congress party's decision to dissolve their political partnership, emphasizing that their primary focus is on aiding those impacted by the floods in Upper Assam from July 19, rather than engaging in political disputes.

In light of Congress's announcement, Bhasco De Saikia, the working president of Raijor Dal, stated that party members are currently dedicated to relief and rehabilitation efforts, but they felt it necessary to address the recent developments regarding their alliance.

“It is now clear to everyone that Congress has severed its ties with Raijor Dal. We want to assure the people of Assam that our main concern is to assist those affected by the floods. Our members are fully committed to rehabilitation efforts. However, we felt compelled to hold this press conference to discuss another matter,” De Saikia remarked.

Raijor Dal also criticized Congress for its handling of the flood situation, particularly targeting APCC president Gaurav Gogoi.

De Saikia pointed out that while Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia actively supported flood victims, Gogoi's involvement appeared minimal. “The entire Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency suffered greatly from the floods. Debabrata Saikia provided assistance to the victims, but Gaurav Gogoi's visit seemed largely symbolic. He only visited a few schools and did not inquire about the conditions in other affected areas of Upper Assam,” he claimed.

He further accused Gogoi of failing to adequately address the flood crisis in Parliament or to advocate for increased aid and compensation for those impacted.

Additionally, De Saikia defended Raijor Dal's recent meeting with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, explaining that the delegation aimed to present a memorandum detailing their findings and concerns regarding the floods.

“We met with the Chief Minister two days ago and submitted a document that was essentially a research paper on the floods. Instead of addressing the issues we raised, Congress attempted to distract from the matter by criticizing our visit. In times like these, politics should prioritize the people,” De Saikia stated.

Rasel Hussain, the general secretary of Raijor Dal, also questioned Congress regarding the instances of its leaders switching allegiance to the BJP.

The party expressed no regrets over the dissolution of the alliance, asserting that this split would not deter their commitment to addressing issues relevant to Assam or their rehabilitation efforts in flood-affected regions.

These comments followed the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee's formal announcement of the termination of all political relations with Raijor Dal, citing the regional party's leadership for consistently criticizing Congress leaders and breaching the expected norms of alliance partners.
